Good stuff in your garden growing...? Well, the farm has been bustling recently with late summer planting, harvesting, weeding, taste testing, and keeping the tierra madre moist with nothing but the best water around, straight from the mountians guarding the gardens.
Did you know that Buckhorn uses mountain water during the spring and summer to nutrify your lovely produce? We keep our pond full adjacent to the garden and then pump it to all the veggies, herbs and flowers. We just put in this new irrigation system last summer and it even enables us to fertigate the whole garden with our secret recipe (wink, wink!) of compost tea!
This irrigation system and the newly built walpini were two very large investments Buckhorn has made to bring you the best nutrient dense local produce year-round, not to many farms around doing this year round. The walpini is 150 feet long and about 20 feet wide which doing the math means a lot of indoor growing space for our ever changing and long lasting winter season.
How can you invest in a local farm?
1. Buy a share every so often (most consumers like this approach) when we send out our newsletters.
2. Buy a yearly share of $100, 250, 500, 750, or $1000. (Farms prefer these type of committments and need these type of investments to cover labour, seed and fertilizer cost, new infrastructures, utilities, etc...) Please click on the CSA section for more information.
3. Stop by the local farmer's markets and utilize some of our delicious delights in your kitchen for a taste test!
We've got the greeens coming your way shortly! The crew has been in overdrive recently planting here, there, and everywhere. We have planted some beets, swiss chard, kale, mustards, tons of lettuce, spinach, kohlrabi, endive, carrots, turnips, radishes, and arugula.
Buckhorn was lucky to have two college students come for a week, camp, and work to their heart's content. A big thanks to Madyson and Cole!
Although we are not full time at any local farmer's markets, we have been getting around the western slope! We have been at the last 2 Saturday Montrose Farmer's Markets and will be going to Ridgway's this Friday the 14th, Montrose's on Saturday, and Telluride next Friday the 21st.
What's up with the summer CSA? We will be getting back into action with a box on Friday the 21st which will include peppers, tomatoes (cherries, heirlooms and hybrids), eggplants, spring onions, scallions, leeks, garlic, potatoes and herbs! You should be able to concoct quite a few superb meals from that share.
We have added some new recipes (Eggplant parm anyone?) recently and have updated the New Agrarian section to include the current crop of farmers you are sponsoring, so check out these sections on our blog.
The farm has just started this week taking our market/wholesale leftovers that we can't eat to the local food bank in Montrose and have donated 70 pounds this week! We are going to try and collect from other farms at the end of the markets to get this food to the people, although it's going to be to the detriment of Rocky and Zen's (our goats) and the chickens' diet and the compost pile's girth at our farm!
